30 Problems/30 Fixes – Tip #10 Balance at Date

Kim Dallefeld, MCP, MCT, MCP

When using a Date Filter on the Chart of Accounts, it is difficult to remember when to use a date range with beginning and ending dates (060125..063025) and when to use no beginning date (..063025).

Why does it matter? When using beginning and end date, the Net Change column gives you activity for that date range which great for income statement accounts. When leaving the beginning date empty, the Net Change will then give you the balance for the date entered.

Recommendation:

Make sure that you ‘unhide’ the Balance at Date. That way using the beginning and ending dates will give you what you want for Net Change and Balance at Date is the balance sheet amount for the ending date. And you don’t have to use the option that leaves the beginning date empty!
